Please give Barry Bannan and Ross Wallace extended contracts.
Not sure I really need to say more than that but I’ve got another 290 words to go to fill this column.
Bannan has been outstanding since arriving from Crystal Palace and has deservedly been voted Sheffield Wednesday Player of the Month for October.
Wallace has also been voted PFA Fans’ Player of the Month for August and September.
These are players making a difference.
The Owls have dipped their toes in the water with one-year deals for the pair, mainly to see what they can do and now we need to persuade them to stay because they are integral to our progress.
Although there are statistically better performing players at the club, mainly Sam Hutchinson and defensive stalwart Tom Lees, the diminutive duo contribute a creative flair that has brought back the feel good factor at Hillsborough.
It’s not just the entertainment value they bring, Wallace is responsible for almost a fifth of all goal assists this season.
Whilst signing them on longer contracts doesn’t necessarily mean they will stay for the long term. For example,
I still have a deep foreboding feeling that Keiren Westwood will be sold in January because he hasn’t played in any of the cup games.
It could be as innocent as giving Joe Wildsmith game time but the suspicious part of me thinks that it means Westwood won’t be cup-tied for a team that may buy him in January transfer window.
It would be a shame if we lose Bannan and Wallace to other clubs after they have showcased their skills so well at Hillsborough.
So I reiterate, please Sheffield Wednesday give Barry Bannan and Ross Wallace extended contracts.
