Sheffield Wednesday cruised to a 2-0 victory over York City in their opening pre-season friendly this afternoon.

Chris Maguire was the architect of their two first half goals. His low free kick was turned in by Femi Ilesanmi in the 26th minute.

And just before the interval, Maguire doubled their advantage, drilling in an unstoppable right foot shot from 25 yards out which gave Jason Mooney no chance.

French trialist Achille Campion, who has been training with the Owls this week, played the opening 45 minutes. He partnered Gary Madine up front.

Sam Hutchinson started at centre-half alongside Joe Mattock but new signing Keiren Westwood, Lewis Buxton and Kamil Zayatte was left out of the match-day squad along

After the re-start, Wednesday had a huge let off when Keith Lowe ghosted in unmarked at the back post to meet Luke Summerfield’s corner but he headed into the side netting.

Caolan Lavery could have grabbed a third for the visitors in the 55th minute after he raced on to Michail Antonio’s through ball. However, the young forward’s left foot drive from an acute angle was easily kept out by substitute goalkeeper Michael Ingham.

Midway through the half, Michail Antonio was foiled by Michael Ingham, with McCoy hacking away the loose ball.

It took a last ditch tackle by Lowe to deny Atdhe Nuhiu a sight at goal after a surging run by Lavery through the heart of York’s defence.

With five minutes remaining, Ingham produced a smart stop to keep out Nuhiu’s downward header after a lovely move on the left flank involving Antonio and Rafa Floro.
