Sheffield Wednesday are closing in on Neil Mellor as a flagship summer signing.

And it may not cost the Owls a fee to bring back last season’s 20-goal leading scorer.

Mellor’s return is more a matter of when rather than if, the Telegraph understands. All the indications are that a deal will be thrashed out based around the player’s substantial contract with Preston.

Although he has taken a drop under a relegation clause following Preston’s exit from the Championship, Mellor remains on big wages for a club in League One.

It would also be a steep commitment for the Owls - but the striker’s desire to come back to Hillsborough is driving the issue as well as providing room for compromise.

Ordinarily, Mellor would cost a fee up front and Preston are technically in a position to demand one.
