Adam Davies has signed a new one-year contract - reinforcing Dave Jones’ view that an additional keeper is not a priority for the Owls.
Although Stephen Bywater and Nicky Weaver have left, Davies remains with No 1 Chris Kirkland plus Arron Jameson and Cameron Dawson in the goalkeeping department.
“We have some good young keepers here,” said Jones. “We are keeping our ear to the ground and have spoken to one or two people.
“But another goalkeeper is not a priority. If it was a number one we’re talking about, it would be different. But it doesn’t mean it’s not on the list.” Davies, formerly with Everton, was signed last October initially for the short term.
On the forward front, Jones is still in the hunt for Leroy Lita and Jeremy Helan, and has spoken to Kevin Davies, but admits that Chris O’Grady could be followed out of the exit door by others.
“It’s an ongoing process (the player search),” he said. “We’re talking to a lot of people.” He revealed that new signing Jacques Maghoma was under scrutiny from the middle of last season. Jones met the winger in London this summer before a visit to Sheffield was arranged.
Jermaine Johnson, Michail Antonio and Reda Johnson were missing from full training when work resumed yesterday. JJ returns on July 7 after being away with Jamaica. Antonio and Reda are on the way back from injuries and step up their training next month. Giles Coke joined in but has yet to sign a new deal.
The squad started with some running at Middlewood yesterday morning but the afternoon session of ballwork was held on the University of Sheffield’s all-weather surface at Broomhill. Today’s programme will be similar.
Jones explained that the reseeded Middlewood pitches were twice washed out by rain and are two weeks behind schedule.
