Sheffield Wednesday: Carlos Carvalhal looking for progress at Alfreton

Carlos Carvalhal will be looking for signs that the penny is starting to drop among the Owls squad in their first friendly at Alfreton Town this afternoon.

Sheffield Wednesday’s new head coach insists he is not concerned about the result at the Impact Arena but rather witnessing if his methods are being taken on board.

“It is important to see our position in respect to what we are trying to do on the training ground,” Carvalhal said.

“We can check with offensive organisation if they are doing and understanding what we want in the game. And it is the same with defensive organisation and transitioning between those.

“It is about seeing if they are receiving the message. This is the most important.

“After the match we will correct everything they are doing wrong and get it right for the first match against Bristol City. That is what is important for us.”

It is safe to assume Carvalhal will be slightly affronted if his side are on the wrong end of a similar scoreline from the last time a Wednesday side visited Alfreton.

A young Owls XI suffered a 14-0 defeat to the Reds four years ago, making national headlines in the process.

But with a full Wednesday squad set to travel to Derbyshire, a repeat of the 2011 meeting seems unlikely.

Carvalhal said: “We will mix the players.

“We will give opportunities for our boys to play from Under 21s but we will take all our squad to the match.

“These type of matches are very, very tiring. The players are working very hard and they are tired.

“We want also to look at them when they are tired to understand whow they can cope with these difficulties.”

Kick off is 3pm. Admission is £10 for adults, £5 concessions, £2 U16s.
