Sheffield Wednesday: Carlos Carvalhal refuses to rule out changing Sam Hutchinson’s role

Head coach Carlos Carvalhal has hinted he may play Sam Hutchinson in a central midfield position again.

Carvalhal decided to alter Hutchinson’s role in pre-season, switching him from the middle of the park to centre-half in an attempt to solve their defensive shortage.

Hutchinson, a graduate of Chelsea’s youth system, is no stranger to that position, having played there before in his formative years.

Aside from his sending off against Bristol City, the 27-year-old has starred at centre-back but some supporters feel they have missed his energy and bite in midfield.

Carvalhal told The Star: “Sam is a player who belongs to us so I can play him in other positions if I choose to. We can do this with Sam and different players. It is not a problem for us.

“It’s good that we have players who can play in different positions.”

Hutchinson is expected to be restored to Wednesday’s starting line-up in this afternoon’s home clash with Nottingham Forest after completing a one-match suspension.

“Sam is available now so we have one more option,” said Carvalhal. “We need all our players.

“We have achieved six points in the last three games. We are just at the beginning of this marathon but three points can make a massive difference.

“It (the Championship) is a very difficult competition. Teams at the bottom can beat teams at the top. We must focus on ourselves.”
