Sheffield Wednesday: Carvalhal’s old boys part of pre-season calendar

Sheffield Wednesday will play the former side of head coach elect Carlos Carvalhal as part of their pre-season calendar.

The Owls have announced a friendly with Braga - whom Carvalhal both played for and managed - as part of their training camp in Portugal, which was arranged several months ago.

Wednesday will face the Portuguese outfit on July 24.

The Owls will play on the new state of the art Hillsborough pitch just once in pre-season when Scottish Championship side St Mirren visit S6 on August 1.

St Mirren finished bottom of the Scottish Premiership last season.

It had been planned for Hull City to provide the opposition for the final friendly of the summer but the Tigers’ relegation to the Championship scuppered the fixture.

The pre-season programme of fixtures begins on July 11 with a trip to National League North side Alfreton Town while Evo-Stik League outfit Ilkeston will play host on July 15.

The Owls will no doubt be looking for a better result against Alfreton than the one they were on the wrong end of four years ago. A Wednesday XI was beaten 14-0 in a scoreline that made national headlines.

Wednesday will travel to League Two York City on July 18, ahead of their trip to Portugal. York were the hosts for Wednesday’s first pre-season fixture last summer, with Stuart Gray’s side winning 2-0 with an own goal and a superb Chris Maguire strike.

Their penultimate friendly is a trip to Scunthorpe United on July 29.
