SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY: Dave Jones issues Owls trial challenge to striker Marlon Harewood

SHEFFIELD Wednesday manager Dave Jones has challenged Marlon Harewood to keep on impressing in pre-season training to earn a permanent contract at Hillsborough.

The striker, a free agent after leaving Nottingham Forest at the end of last season, is currently on trial with the Owls.

Harewood, who has previously had a loan spell at Barnsley, started his career at the City Ground but injuries blighted his second spell with Wednesday’s Championship rivals.

Having linked up with Jones’ men, the 32-year-old could be given a run-out in either of the club’s two friendlies with Sheffield FC or Stocksbridge next Tuesday. The Owls plan on sending two different teams to the non-league clubs, consisting of senior and junior players.

Jones told The Star: “Marlon seems to be enjoying it here and has a smile on his face. He is working his socks off and is is doing really well.

“Marlon made the initial phone call and said he wanted to come here which was good. It shows he is prepared to put his ability on the line and show us what he has got.

“We are giving him the best possible opportunity to stake his claim.

“Marlon is doing what is expected of him and he knows he has got to do well and prove to us he should be given a contract.”

Jones says there is no deadline over Harewood’s trial period. The Owls boss, who has denied the club have tabled a bid for Southend United player Bilel Mohsni, also confirmed Jason Koumas will join in training towards the end of July.
