DAVE Jones has raised his sights as he targets Championship safety for the Owls.

The Wednesday manager believes that the traditional safety mark of 50 points will not be enough this time, so tight is the table.

“I think you need more; I think it’s going to be 52 or 53,” said Jones.

That means the Owls are looking for at least 15 points from their remaining 14 games.

“It’s just so tight down there,” added Jones. “There’s not much between anybody; you get times like this in this division.

“I remember talking to the people from Wolves when we played them last month; they never thought they would be in any danger; they were still looking for the play-offs; now all of a sudden they’re in it.”

Wolves have slipped into the bottom three after their defeat by resurgent Barnsley, and only three points cover the seven teams who are just above the relegation zone.

With the Owls unbeaten in six league games, Jones said: “We’re confident, We’re working hard. There’s a great team spirit around the place. The lads believe they are not going to lose, which is good. We have to keep it going.”

He feels that the more teams that get dragged into the relegation battle, the better:

“One or two of the teams higher up have been getting a bit twitchy.

“I said you want it to be three from 12; now, when you look at the table, it could be three out of 14, it’s getting so tight. You want it like that.

“You want to keep ticking along and hope that other teams drop points.

“We’ve put another point in the bag (at Birmingham) but we have to make sure we get the three points in the next one.”

The Owls take on fourth-placed Crystal Palace at Hillsborough on Saturday.

Added Jones: “It’s a tough one against a team that’s trying to get out of the division. This will be another big test for us.”
