SHEFFIELD Wednesday old boy Ben Marshall is confident the Owls will hold their nerve and gain promotion to the Championship.

The Salford-born player, who impressed during a loan spell at Hillsborough earlier in the season, scoring five goals in 22 appearances, still speaks to his former teammates and wishes them well in the final four fixtures.

The wing ace told The Star: “It is great to see Sheffield Wednesday doing well. I’ve kept in touch with all the lads.

“Wednesday’s results are the first ones I look for. I loved my time at the club and I hope they go up.

“It was great for my development playing in front of a lot of fans. The expectation levels at Wednesday are massive so it was a brilliant experience and it was good to be in that environment.

“It is looking an interesting battle between the two Sheffield clubs at the top but I’m sure Wednesday will go up either automatically or through the play-offs.

“I’m keeping my fingers crossed for them.”

It was in the January transfer window Marshall swapped Stoke City for Leicester City in £1 million switch following the expiry of his loan deal at Wednesday. He agreed a three-year contract and is in a rich vein of form for the Championship outfit, hitting four goals in his last seven outings.

Marshall says the Owls decision to dispense with Gary Megson’s services as manager a month ago was “very harsh”. But he is happy Dave Jones has come in and reignited their top-two hopes.

“I still speak to Gary [Megson] quite a lot,” revealed Marshall. “I was shocked when he was sacked.

“I thought it was very harsh he lost his job but the results since then speak for themselves. I have spoken to quite a few of the lads and they seem to be enjoying it under Dave so everything seems to be going well.”
