SHEFFIELD Wednesday are understood to be tracking former defender Richard Wood, The Star has learned.

The uncompromising Coventry City centre-back is believed to be on the Championship new boys’ radar as manager Dave Jones continues to revamp his Owls side.

Wood came through the ranks at Hillsborough, making more than 170 league appearances over a six-and-a-half-year period.

The 27-year-old, who has a year left to run of his contract at the Ricoh Arena, departed Wednesday in November 2009. He initially joined the Sky Blues on loan before moving on a permanent basis the following year.

Wood struggled to command a regular first-team place at Coventry last term, making just 12 league starts and five substitute appearances.

He has recently recovered from knee surgery after an injury sustained in a challenge with Reading’s Jimmy Kebe back in February but has not featured since then in Coventry’s first-team.

Wood is one of Coventry’s highest earners and is likely to command a transfer fee.

Wednesday are in the market for another central defender.
