Sheffield Wednesday’s match against Blackpool today was declared on after a pitch inspection that began at 1.35pm.

Heavy rain had caused fears that it would have to be called off because of waterlogging.

Referee Dean Whitestone of Northampton shook hands with managers Stuart Gray and Paul Ince then did a tour of the pitch, kicking a ball, accompanied by his assistants and the fourth official.

Owls chairman Milan Mandaric was among other officials watching from the touchline.

The rain had stopped just before the inspection, which lasted nine minutes.

The ball appeared to be sticking a little in the corner between the North Stand and the Kop but generally the surface seemed playable, with officials hoping there would no more heavy rain.
