Lewis McGugan is prepared for a fight to become a permanent fixture in Owls’ midfield after finally joining the Championship club on a permanent basis.

The Owls have been chasing McGugan’s signature for several months, with the Nottingham-born player having impressed in two loan spells with Wednesday last season.

And their patience paid off yesterday as McGugan completed his protracted move, arriving for an undisclosed fee from Watford, believed to be in the region of £300,000.

McGugan, who has penned a three-year deal, will be battling it out with Jose Semedo, Kieran Lee, Filipe Melo and fellow newcomer Alex Lopez for a midfield spot.

He said: “It’s a new start for everybody and that can only breed confidence around the place. There’s always competition for places and that gets the best out of everyone. Hopefully I can do what the manager wants me to do as an individual and for the team.

“If everyone can pull in the right direction, hopefully it will be a good season.”

The 26-year-old said the level of support he has received from Wednesdayites was a key factor behind his decision to return to Hillsborough. He is relieved to have got the deal over the line, saying: “It’s been a stressful couple of days but the most important thing is we have got it done.

“It was always in my mindset to come back. I had a brilliant time here last year.

“Coming here allowed me to enjoy my football and enjoy playing in front of the fans. They have been amazing with me, even over the summer.

“I was interested as soon as I heard there was a chance of coming back and playing for this massive club.”

McGugan, who came through the ranks at Nottingham Forest, featured 22 times in Owls colours last term, netting three goals.

“This is my home now,” he said. “I have got to concentrate on giving everything for the team and hopefully it will be a start of good things to come.”

McGugan is Wednesday’s eighth summer signing and is expected to be involved in tomorrow’s friendly at York City, having trained with the rest of the first-team squad yesterday.

McGugan added: “It’s an exciting time to be at Sheffield Wednesday.”
