Sheffield Wednesday No 1 Chris Kirkland has paid tribute to coach Stuart Gray, claiming he played a key part in the South Yorkshire club avoiding relegation.
Results noticeably picked up after Gray linked up again with Dave Jones, the Owls boss, last December, with Wednesday safeguarding their Championship future on the final day of the season.
It is understood Wednesday’s hierarchy want Gray, who has previously worked with Jones at Southampton and Wolves, to prolong his stay at Hillsborough. The Yorkshireman is highly regarded by the Owls players and Kirkland has outlined the qualities he brings to the club.
“I can’t speak highly enough of Stuart,” the former England international told The Star. “He has been a massive help.
“Stuart is very calm and knowledgeable. He has worked with the gaffer before so he knew what he was going to get from him. He could not have brought a better person in.
“All the lads enjoy working with him. When he speaks, you listen.”
Despite speculation linking him with a summer switch to Premier League-bound Hull City, Kirkland told this newspaper a week ago that he has no desire to leave Wednesday.
