Sheffield Wednesday new boy Barry Bannan is banking on his switch to the Owls to get him back into the international reckoning.

The midfielder found his chances for game time limited at Crystal Palace while an untimely injury kept him out of the Scotland squad for the games with Georgia and Germany in the current international break.

Feeling his international future was at stake, the 25-year-old knew a change of clubs was required and the opportunity to join Wednesday arose.

Bannan said: “The last few weeks have been a nightmare as I picked up a thigh injury and haven’t been able to play or train.

“That meant there was no chance of me being involved in the Georgia and Germany games.

“But I spoke to the manager (Gordon Strachan) last week about my situation and now the move to Wednesday has come up at the perfect time.

“I restarted training this week and hopefully will get a chance to establish myself in the Wednesday team before the next round of Scotland games.

“Hopefully this can the start of something big for the club and all the positive progress with Scotland can continue.Everyone knows how much being involved with Scotland means to me, especially this season with the prospect of making the Euros.”
