Wednesday could be set to end their hunt for a midfield player by signing Seyi Olofinjana.

But with a deal not yet possible, last season’s duo of Giles Coke and David Prutton may get a new chance to stake their claim in tomorrow’s clash with Burnley.

Coke missed the Cup tie at Rotherham because of muscle soreness and was replaced by Rhys McCabe but is back in training. Dave Jones has assured his players that the door is closed to no-one - as was proved when Coke and Prutton enjoyed a renaissance last season.

Olofinjana, who was a success while on loan from Hull from the final six weeks of last season, has been training with Wednesday for a week and is a free agent.

Jones admires the 33-year-old and hopes to sign a striker, possibly Leroy Lita, but has underlined the fact that financially he cannot overload his squad: “Things are tight, and until I can move people out I can’t bring people in.”

In addition the squad is being stretched by injuries.

“It always gives somebody else an opportunity,” said Jones. “At the moment there are a lot of opportunities for people to show ‘I’m ready and I can do it.’

“We need to strengthen and move players out when they’re surplus to requirements. But players have been given opportunities in the past and taken them. The door is never closed.”
