Talented youngster Joe Wildsmith is set to make only his fifth ever Wednesday start in their much-anticipated Capital One Cup fourth round clash at home to Arsenal.
The lifelong Owls fan will get his chance to impress against one of the best teams in English football on Tuesday, with head coach Carlos Carvalhal choosing to rest first-choice shot-stopper Keiren Westwood.
“I have complete confidence in Joe [Wildsmith],” stressed Carvalhal. “When he has come into the team, he has done fantastic.
“Keiren Westwood is an amazing goalkeeper as everybody knows and Joe is a very, very talented young goalkeeper.
“He made his international debut for the England Under-20s recently and was then called into the Under-21s and that is a sign of the progress he has made.
“So Joe will play in this game against Arsenal. This is an important game and one we want to win.”
Wednesday will be without several senior players as they aim to stretch their unbeaten run to nine matches, including defender Michael Turner. It is likely Carvalhal will continue to shuffle his pack.
He said: “We must wait on some players but we know Turner, Alex Lopez, Marco Matias and Modou Sougou will not play. We cannot take risks with anyone. The Championship is the priority but we want to go as far as we possibly can in the cups.”
Lucas Joao is a doubt, having had one of his tooth knocked out in Friday’s 2-1 success at Rotherham. Fernando Forestieri is cup-tied.
