Stephen McPhail has given an assurance about his fitness after his health problems of the past.

He was given the all-clear from cancer, and his immune-system syndrome is being managed: the midfielder feels he just needs games to regain full match sharpness.

“It was good to get 90 minutes last week. I wasn’t expecting that,” said the 33-year-old who trained with Wednesday for weeks before being signed.

“I’m just looking forward to going out there every week and doing my best, and working hard every day in training.

“I couldn’t lose a yard of pace, because I’ve never had it! The tests on my running are the same as in the middle of my career. My endurance is really good.”

His immune disease has not flared up for more than a year; “It causes joint aches, dryness of the eyes and mouth. You just feel like you want to stay in bed. But a day of treatment calms it down.“

He has taken a pay cut to rejoin Dave Jones and hopes that his four-month contract will be followed by a longer deal.
