Sheffield United boss Nigel Adkins is hoping for a welcome injury boost, after Bob Harris and Ryan Flynn made cameo appearances for United’s U21 side this week.
The Scottish duo both played 45 minutes for United’s Development side against Chesterfield on Wednesday, and Flynn could be included in the matchday squad when United host Millwall at Bramall Lane this afternoon (12.15pm).
Both players have missed large parts of the season to date - left back Harris has yet to feature this term - and boss Adkins said: “They’ve both come back for the under-21’s so that’s really pleasing.
“That’s the first 45 minutes of a pre-season, if you like, for them. Ryan is a little bit closer to where we want in terms of squad selection than Bob. That’s understandable. For him, it’s all about building that strength up.”
Several of United’s longer-term fitness worries, including John Brayford, are also nearing a return to training and Adkins added: “The squad’s too big, as I’ve said a few times, so when everyone’s back we’ll have to look at that.
“We need a strong enough squad to cope with the demands of League One, but I have to also be fair to them and get them some football.
“So they might go out on loan, make some tackles, score some goals and play some games, and then still be available for us, as and when we need them.”
