VIDEO: Sheffield Wednesday - Kit Symons joins Ross Wallace fan club

Fulham boss Kit Symons was full of praise for Owls winger Ross Wallace following their narrow defeat at Hillsborough.

The 30-year-old terrorised the Cottagers’ defence, especially in the first half, and created all three of Wednesday’s headed goals from set pieces.

Symons, who watched Wednesday in action at Bolton Wanderers last Tuesday, said: “Ross [Wallace] has got real quality and we knew that going into the game.

“They (Wednesday) put good balls into the box, we knew the deliveries would be good but people have to do their jobs.”

Symons bemoaned his side’s poor defending from dead ball situations as the Cottagers slipped to their first league defeat against the Owls since 1983.

“Poor defending from set-pieces and balls into our box cost us very dearly,” he said. “That side of our game wasn’t good enough.

“Fernando Forestieri is one of their smallest players and he got a free header. Jazz Richards was marking him and he’s decent in the air and I would have expected him to deal with it.

“Take them (the goals) out of it and we played pretty well, so I’m torn between two stools. I’m annoyed with the defending from set-pieces and balls played into the box but I’m proud of the way the players performed, especially in the second half.

“In open play, we were the better team by a country mile, but it’s not just about that. If you score twice away, you expect to get something but we were masters of our own downfall.”

Symons reckons the Championship promotion race is a tough one to predict.

“This Championship is so tight to call,” he said. “Last year, there would be teams who would dominate for 90 minutes but I’ve not seen a game where that’s been the case this season. It makes it exciting and more teams try to play. It’s a real tough, honest league and I think it’s going to be really close this year.
