SHEFFIELD United have signed Dave Kitson to bring the former Portsmouth striker to Bramall Lane.

Kitson, aged 32, was without a club after severing his ties with United’s League One rivals earlier this summer.

Danny Wilson, the United manager, has signed him after the departure of Stephen Quinn.

The former Republic of Ireland under-21 international completed a much-anticipated move to Hull City yesterday.

Kitson will now complete with Nick Blackman, John Cofie, Shaun Miller and Richard Cresswell for places in Wilson’s attack.

Although United had previously distanced themselves from reports linking the 6ft 3in centre-forward with South Yorkshire, Kitson and his representatives are believed to have approached officials about the possibility of a switch north earlier this week.

Quinn’s departure marked the start of a busy day at Bramall Lane with Nick Montgomery, previously United’s longest-serving player, also waving goodbye to South Yorkshire.

The former Scotland under-21 international joined Australian outfit Central Coast Mariners after terminating his contract by mutual consent.

Wilson, whose team entertain AFC Bournemouth today, paid tribute to Quinn after he put pen to paper on a three year deal with Steve Bruce’s side.

“Stephen is a quality player,” he said. “That’s exactly what Hull are getting.

“Everyone here really enjoyed working with Quinny, but this is a great opportunity for him.”
