Owls Fans Column: Shrews betting on a draw for Wednesday then?

Thinking about our FA Cup match on Saturday the only thing I know about Shrewsbury Town is that the bassist in the spoof documentary ‘This is Spinal Tap’, wears one of their club shirts in the film. Even for me this slice of knowledge is a bit esoteric.

Trying to bolster my knowledge of Shrewsbury Town I did a bit of research and there are a few Wednesday connections with The Shrews. Former manager David Pleat played for the club as did Gary Megson and, in the twilight of his senior career, so did Nigel Jemson.

We’ve played Shrewsbury 20 times in our history, mainly during the seventies and eighties in the dark days of Division Two and Three.

The odds are against a Wednesday win, we’ve only beaten them three times. Shrewsbury have the upper hand with five wins and there have been 12 draws.

I was trying to think if I could remember watching The Owls play The Shrews and I couldn’t so I looked back in the records to see when we last played them. It was 29 years ago on the 6th October 1987.

The match was a second round, second leg Littlewoods League Cup game at Hillsborough that we won 2-1. True to the form the first leg had been a 1-1 draw at Gay Meadow.

Colin West scored both goals in the second leg at Hillsborough, in front of a paltry crowd, according to The Star’s report, and roughly ten days later Howard Wilkinson signed a young defender from Shrewsbury called Nigel Pearson for £250,000. I’m guessing he made a very good impression.

Shrewsbury are currently lingering around the relegation places in League 1 so with our form we should have a comfortable win but as I’ve learned from my new found Shrewsbury knowledge it’ll probably be a draw.
