Chesterfield gave a decent account of themselves against Championship opposition tonight.

Paul Cook’s League Two team tied with Nottingham Forest at the Proact stadium.

A great goal from new signing Gary Roberts ensured a share of the spoils in this friendly.

Billy Davies’ visitors, who will play Royal Antwerp at The City Ground next Saturday, had to survive an early scare when midfielder Sam Morsy fired in a shot from 20 yards.

Then Ritchie Humphreys’ connection to a Drew Talbot cross flew over the bar.

But Forest stormed ahead on 17 minutes, when Matt Derbyshire escaped the home shackles and plonked the ball past Tommy Lee.

Jimmy Ryan had a speculative effort, but Forest held on to their lead, despite Hendrick Cakin having a clear chance.

Jamie Paterson could also have extended Forest’s lead.

The second half saw an unsuccessful Forest appeal for a penalty after Chris Cohen hit the pitch following a Sam Hird challenge.

Then Jay O’Shea forced a save from De Vries at the other end.

It was a turbo-charged period of the game with Marc Richards heading over from a Humphreys cross and Hird clearing his lines at the last moment.

Liam Cooper showed to some expert defending to deny visiting striker Dexter Blackstock.

And then Armand Gnanduillet headed one chance over the bar and was foiled in another by the goalie.

Chesterfield finally got level on 79 minutes, courtesy of substitute Roberts.

The winger signed from Swindon last month spun on the on the edge of the area and banged in a cracker past De Vries.

It was a deserving leveller in an absorbing friendly.
