CHESTERFIELD hunted down the Pirates, winning 2-0.

On the 16th anniversary of arguably Chesterfield’s most significant result in their history, the 1-0 FA Cup quarter final victory over Wrexham, Paul Cook was looking to conjure up some magic against an in-form Bristol Rovers side.

John Ward has led Rovers to eight wins and three draws in his 14 games at the helm, a run that saw them one place and two points behind Spireites

Armand Gnanduillet and Jack Lester were up front this afternoon.

The game started in very cold temperatures, a couple of dozen Rovers fans dressed as penguins certainly didn’t look out of place.

Neither side was able to get themselves into a position of dominance for any meaningful spell as defenders dominated with Nathan Smith and Parkes the pick from each side.

Frenchman Gnanduillet picked up the ball after a Rovers mistake and made headway but Mildenhall saved his low 20 yarder. Richards hit high for the visitors from a decent opening.

Spireites pushed on. Townsend won a corner that was never properly dealt with and the ball fell for O’SHEA who made a few yards ground before unleashing an unstoppable shot to give his side a 53rd minute lead.

Tounkara was replaced by Tounkara and Darikwa came on for Lester. The changes went well for the home side as almost immediately they doubled their lead. In the 73rd minute big GNANDUILLET powered in from the left and slotted in from an acute angle, a fine individual goal.
