Goal joy for Chesterfield as they celebrate Marc Richards putting them two up

Chesterfield did all they could at Fleetwood today to keep their play off dreams alive but ultimately to no avail

Marc Richards struck twice to help secure the three points.

Lee gathered from Matt at the second attempt and Evans had a long range free-kick blocked as the hosts continued to have the majority of possession, but they were finding it difficult to get behind Spireites back line.

Togwell almost found Richards in the box just ahead of a corner for Spireites. Townsend delivered from the right, Trotman got to the ball first but his header was blocked and fell to the head of GNANDUILLET to convert in the 44th minute.

Chesterfield doubled their lead two minutes into additional time. A long ball forwards was headed down by the defence for RICHARDS to lash home from just inside the box. With Burton holding Bradford, everything needed to take the season to the final match, at home to Exeter City, was in place with just half a match to go.

n the 63rd minute Spireites put the result all but to bed. O’Shea fed Togwell, Davies blocked at his feet and the rebound fell for RICHARDS on the right corner of the box and he hit high into the roof of the net.

Captain Pugwash’s theme came over the tannoy when Ball played a long, low ball to MANGAN, who looked offside, but he wasn’t flagged and he beat Lee with a deft finish five minutes after Richards’ goal.

With 10-man Burton seemingly unable to make any headway in West Yorks, it was all looking like another season in the basement was set to be confirmed with Spireites standing in a season’s high eighth spot.
