Futsal internationals

The England men’s national Futsal team will be playing two friendly international matches against Greece at the English Institute of Sport on June 24-25.

It’s the first time they have met since their closely fought 2-2 draw in Birmingham in 2007 and with Greece ranked over 30 places higher than England they should prove a formidable challenge.

Tickets cost £1.50 for children and students and £3 for adults. Kick-off on Friday, June 24 is 7:30pm and 4pm on the Saturday.

Exhibition Futsal games involving local teams will take place before each match, including one on Saturday involving Sheffield Futsal Club versus the England Development Squad. To pre-book tickets visit or call 0114 256 5567.

It’s Sevens heaven

THE arrival of Sevens Rugby on the Olympic Games schedule and a greater focus on leisure rugby by the RFU has provoked a big increase in interest in the sevens game worldwide.

That added impetus comes to the area on Sunday, July 17, when the South Yorkshire Sevens will be staged at Thornensians Rugby Club.

Entries are open to any team, whether a club side or a collection of friends, with a £10 entry fee per team.

Squads must comprise 10 players, who must be old enough and eligible to play adult rugby.

Coach back at Leeds

Former Sheffield Rugby Union club’s first team coach Diccon Edwards is to return to Leeds Carnegie next month as the club’s new head coach.

Edwards, who left Abbeydale to front the Leeds Academy, joined the RFU last summer as National Academy Coach and has worked as the assistant to England Under-20 head coach Rob Hunter this season.

He will return to Headingley after this month’s IRB Junior World Championship in Italy. England, the Under-20 RBS Six Nations champions, kick off the tournament tomorrow against Ireland in Treviso.

Edwards said: “I feel that I have developed a great deal in the last 12 months and helping the England U-20s achieve a Grand Slam this season was a particular highlight for me.

“However, the chance to come back to my club and help return us to the top flight was too good to resist and I feel the timing is right for me as a coach.”
