League One Rotherham United went ahead after 17 minutes tonight against York City in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Northern Second Round - and there was no looking back from that point on.
League One Millers, with one win in their last three were determined to put on a decent display for their travelling fans, in the cup tournament.
And they could afford to leave it up to York’s Derby-born defender Chris Smith to put them ahead.
Joe Skarz had fed the ball in from the byline on the left for Smith to nod past his own goalie.
York tried to wrestle their way back in, they had a chance headed off the line and a goal disallowed for offside.
It was 0-2 in the second half, though, Kieran Agard scoring on 63 minutes.
Six minutes later and the score was widened to three, courtesy of an Alex Revell header.
It was the final nail in City’s common.
