Sheffield Steelers came from behind to win their first match of the season.

Cardiff Devils seized home advantage and went ahead through Joey Martin at 21;22.

But a lethal double strike from Mathieu Roy and Jason Hewitt stunned the Welsh side.

However the advantage soon disappeared - and in a way Sheffield coach Gerad Adams, back at his old club, won’t have been happy with.

Chris Culligan scored short-handed, at 29;31, in this Challenge Cup tie.

But the see-saw nature of the game saw Devils conceded again, Roy getting the second of the night.

It was a bad tempered affair at times, but there were plenty of plus points for coach Adams and his new look team.

“I was thrilled for the guys, this is a difficult rink to come into” he said.

“We made a lot of good plays at the right time.”

Adams said he thankful for the reception he received from Cardiff fans on his return.

Dominc Osman opened the scoring for the visiting Stingrays 5:23 into the contest but the lead lasted just 25 seconds as Morissette cashed in on the Devils’ first power-play opportunity of the evening.

Joey Martin’s power-play goal in the second period put Cardiff ahead and it took a game-tying goal from Cory Tanaka 7:09 from the end of regulation to force the extra period, where Morissette earned Cardiff the win.

In Fife, Brian Stewart made the perfect start to his Coventry Blaze career with a 34-save shutout as Rory Rawlyk’s second-period marker gave the visitors a 1-0 win over the Flyers.

Derek Roehl scored the shootout winner as Ryan Finnerty’s Braehead Clan launched their season with a 4-3 win over defending champions Belfast Giants.

This evening, Sheffield Steelers open their season at Cardiff, in the Challenge Cup.

Tyler Mosienko (suspended) and Jonathan Phillips (operation recovery) are out the line-up.
