Manchester Storm announced their return to Elite League hockey in emphatic style by thrashing Edinburgh Capitals 8-1 at Altrincham Ice Arena.

The original Storm closed in 2002 due to financial problems but the liquidation of Hull Stingrays allowed the new team to fill that gap and compete in the 2015-16 season.

And they proved they are not planning to simply make up the numbers as goals from Luke Salazar (three), Mathew Sisca (two), Vinny Scarsella, Igor Bobchek and Grant Toulmin laid waste to the Capitals, for whom Trevor Gerling did manage to score in the second period.

Elsewhere, Coventry Blaze ran out 4-1 winners over Fife Flyers at the SkyDome Arena.

Four of the five goals - captain Ashley Tait's early opener excepted - arrived in the third period. Michael Quesnele and Cale Tanaka bolstered Coventry's lead before Michael Dorr replied for the Flyers, leaving Neil Trimm to rubber-stamp the hosts' victory
