Point guard BJ Holmes showed Sharks fans what they have been missing, with a MVP performance on his return against Durham Wildcats last weekend.
And Holmes, who helped the Sharks to a 81-67 win over Durham with a top-class personal haul of 19 points, eight assists and six rebounds, roared: “This team is built for success.”
Texas-based star Holmes rejoined the Sharks after Brian Barbour left due to personal reasons, but it was like he’d never been away as he wowed the Sharks crowd at the English Institute of Sport.
And Holmes and his team-mates will hope for more of the same tomorrow evening when they host London Lions in the cup tomorrow evening.
“It feels good to be back - it’s like I never left, to be honest,” Holmes said.
“It feels good to be wanted, and the crowd showed a lot of support. The guys had my back, and I had theirs.”
Asked how his fitness levels coped with a return to BBL action, Holmes smiled: “I was blowing a bit out there!
“I’m still not 100 per cent, to be honest, and I probably pulled a few muscles here and there. But the lads pulled me through it.
“It’s a lot easier when you’ve got people alongside you who can do a lot of different things.
“This team is built for success.”
“To be honest,” Holmes added, “I’m happy just to be playing again. It’s been a long summer, and there is nothing like being in real-game situations.
“You can do all the practice you want but being out on the court with your team-mates, it’s the best thing in the world.”
Last weekend’s win was the Sharks’ fifth of the season, which has enabled them to keep pace with the early pace-setters in the BBL.
Much of that success has been down to the early-season form of Patrick Horstmann, Jeremie Simmons and Da’Quan Cook, under captain Mike Tuck.
“There’s a lot of the same guys here as when I left, and there’s a couple of new faces, too, who have fit into the team perfectly,” Holmes added.
“Patrick is a tremendous shooter - I think he’s a clone of Tuck, although he might be a better shooter!
“They are all very good fits for this team, and I think we’ve got a good chance to be special.”
