England - who have picked Sheffield’s Joe Root to bat at number six - suffered a frustrating start to their test series against New Zealand when the first day was washed out in Dunedin.
After the hosts won the toss and put England into bat, heavy rain led to the day being abandoned without a ball being bowled.
England coach Andy Flower has resisted calls from a host of ex-players, including Michael Vaughan, to promote Root to the top of the order.
“Joe has had a lovely start but it’s only a start,” Flower said.
“He’s handled it really well but everyone should calm down a bit.”
