Nick Robinson-Baker celebrates his 26th birthday today by jetting off to Spain
But it is strictly work and not pleasure,as he continues his preparations for next month’s World Championships in Barcelona.
The Sheffield-based diver competes alongside partner Chris Mears in the synchro 3-metre springboard when the tournament starts on July 19.
The duo are scheduled to compete on Tuesday, July 23, with both the preliminary round and final taking place on the same day.
In anticipation of the Championships, Robinson-Baker and Mears today set off for a warm-weather camp in Mallorca.
Robinson-Baker said: “The camp is a week- ong and it will be about me and Chris getting back into the rhythm.
“It won’t be so much the dives we will be working on but more the fitness aspect.”
The duo will head into the Championships in good form, after picking up three bronze medals in the FINA World Series earlier in the season.
Their score of 392.91 in Edinburgh was followed by two meetings in Guadalajara, Mexico where they scored first a 407.49 and then a 422.94.
Those scores encourage Robinson-Baker that the pair can achieve a podium finish in Spain next month.
He added: “We’ve done well in the series this year and especially with our second score in Mexico.
“That wasn’t far off what we got in London, when we finished fifth, so we’re building nicely towards Barcelona.”
The duo will be hoping to improve on their seventh-place finish at the last Championships in 2011.
Mears has now recovered after an injury concern while the pair competed at a Grand Prix meeting in May in the United States. The Southampton-based athlete had to pull out 30 minutes before the duo were due to dive.
Robinson-Baker was allowed to pair with American Troy Dumais, who won bronze at the Olympics, and they came fifth.
