Sheffield have reached the national finals of the Wilmott Cup team competition for senior men after winning the northern zone qualifying round took place at the English Institute for Sport.
The Sheffield team of Warren Li Kam Wa, Mike Fraser (both Crookes TTC) and Vulcan Redtooth’s David Thompson went unbeaten as they accounted for Chester/Ellesmere 3-2; Worksop 5-0 and Hull 4-1.
Li Kam Wa ended undefeated in singles and doubles, Thompson took three from four sets and Fraser two from four. The finals will be played in Wellingborough on Saturday June 13.
Earlier in the day the Sheffield Junior league held its Plate and Cup finals and again the Barnsley Pirates took the Cup honours with a resounding 9-0 victory over Dore and Totley Sparrows. Jake Cutts, Conor Morris and Tom Masters took the plaudits for the Pirates, however in the semi final, they all fell to Connor Sargent of Dronfield Spinners.
In the final of the Plate event, Amigos de Ping Pong represented by Jonathan Blake, Sam West and James Chenery overcame the Top Spin Terriers 5-2 with West and Chenery both ending with braces. Luke Burgess offered the sternest resistance for the Terriers finishing with two wins of his own.
