Steelers had controlled the game early on and had gone 2-0 up in the first period, through Luke Ferrara and Tyler Mosienko.

But the South Yorkshire team has a peculiar habit of going soft and conceding in bunches and Nottingham ruthlessly took advantage.

Mathieu Roy and Cullen Eddy scored the other Sheffield goals.

Coach Paul Thompson said he was hugely disappointed that his side had built a commanding lead, squandered a chance to go 4-1 up and then capitulated.

He said his side continued to fashion chances even when conceding, but said they lost individual battles, strayed from the game plan and become unrecognisable from the team that had dominated the early stages.

He said he wanted to see his side take out his frustrations on Cardiff Devils on Sunday night at Sheffield Arena.

*Mathew Sisca scored two goals and added three assists to guide Manchester Storm to a 5-2 win over Edinburgh Capitals, while Fife Flyers needed an overtime winner from Jordan Fox to claim a 4-3 victory over Dundee Stars.
