A tough workload for Sheffield Sharks, but fascinating viewing
There might be less than two months left until the end of regular season but there is no let-up in the busy schedule of the B. Braun Sheffield Sharks.
Our third game in six days caught up with us at Worcester on Wednesday.
Coming on the back of that intense win over London last Sunday, we looked a little leggy and an in-form Worcester side took advantage to claim an 88-72 win.Jeremy Hemsley still managed his trademark 19 points and there was an all-round display for Kipper Nichols, who took the MVP honours with 15 points, two rebounds, one assist, three steals and two blocks.
We improved significantly last Sunday but still ended up going down to a 75-69 defeat on the road at Cheshire Phoenix. While Antwon Lillard (21), Jeremy Hemsley (20) and Bennett Koch (16) contributed significant scoring efforts, we lacked a little something off the bench and despite pulling to within three points in the latter stages, it was the home side who toughed out the win.
Just eight points separate leaders Leicester and ourselves in sixth. The Cheshire loss saw them draw level with us on a 10-9 record and the middle of the table is getting a little bunched up.
Eleven games remain in regular season with that all-important top eight finish being the goal for the end of season playoffs.
All the teams have tough March and April schedules due to the late start to the campaign so there is no time to dwell – we will brush ourselves off and go again.
We find ourselves with another home double this coming weekend. We quickly match up once again with Worcester Wolves this Friday. Matt Newby’s side have really hit a purple patch of form that has seen them win their last three games, aided and abetted by new signing Elijah Burns. Bristol Flyers are our visitors on Sunday. Led by GB Assistant Coach Andreas Kapoulas and with GB internationals
Teddy Okereafor and Ben Mockford on their roster, they too will be looking to cement a top eight finish and ensure that they have a decent tilt at the playoffs.
It’s a tough workload that all the teams are facing at the moment but it makes for fascinating viewing. Check out the BBL Player (www.bblplayer.co.uk) if you want to see how this intriguing finish to regular season pans out.
