Young Sheffield basketball talent Jacob Cauthorn has been selected for England under 17s to take part in an international tournament in Scotland.

Cauthorn, aged 16, a student at Silverdale school will join up with his teammates for games against Sweden on Saturday and Scotland on Sunday at Portobello High School in Dunfermline.

The honour caps an excellent season for the 6’6” forward after being a major part of Sheffield Junior Saints’ under 16 squad which reached the National Final Fours.

Saints finished third after bowing out in the semi-finals at the English Institute of Sport in Attercliffe.

He was also a key member of the Silverdale U16s, alongside younger brother Matthew, who lost to eventual national schools champions St Peter’s from Manchester at the quarter-final stage.

Cauthorn, son of former Sheffield Sharks captain Todd Cauthorn, will return to Silverdale next term to begin his A levels.

Proud dad Todd said: “I am very happy to see Jacob get some credit for his performances this season which saw him average 25 points per game for the Saints U16s.

“He has a lot of work to do and many areas to improve on, but enjoys the game and is realistic with his basketball goals.

“His focus is on academics and we will see how much hard work he is willing to do in both school and basketball to make of any opportunities that arise in the future.

“Jacob is excited to get an opportunity to play for the England U17 Horizons team. He has worked hard this year to improve aspects of his game and had a good season for his team the Sheffield Junior Saints.”

Next season the Saints U18s will see the return of local coach Dave Ransom, who will take the helm after three years away from basketball.

Todd said: “He (Ransom) is excited to return to coaching and help develop the talented U16 group moving up to U18 next season. Duco van Oostrum has retired from volunteer coaching and the club would like to give him a huge thank you for his many years of extremely successful coaching and volunteer service.”

Jacob Cauthorn will be joined by fellow South Yorkshire player George Darling (Doncaster Danum Eagles) in the squad.
