Steelers went back to the top of the Elite League with a hard-earned 4-1 win over Cardiff Devils last night.

Backstopped by another great display from Frank Doyle, they resisted some strong arm stuff from the Welsh - who seemed to target the smallest man on the ice, Tyler Mosienko, for their harshest treatment.

Sheffield had failed to create a meaningful attempt on Ben Bowns’ goal before they actually beat him at 5;57.

Ben O’Connor forced the puck forward for Mathieu Roy to do what he does best -finding space to score from close range.

Other than a Mosienko rink-length raid and shots from Colton Fretter and Jonathan Phillips, there wasn’t much goalmouth action from the Arena side.

Devils had been strangely passive in the early stages but they became more offensive, with Josh Batch hammering against the far post.

Rob Dowd and O’Connor also hit the pipework before Dowd scrambled the puck into the net for 2-0 at 34;35.

Twenty six seconds later it was 3-0, with Phil Hill back-handing home against the club he left amid some bitterness. Home debutant Danny Bois assisted.

The professional display was interrupted when a gap opened between Sheffield’s defence and attack, exploited by Carl Hudson who grabbed a goal back. But Steelers contained Devils and Fretter added a fourth at the death.
