Hallamshire’s Gavin Keight was an impressive winner of the Percy Pud 10K road race at Loxley yesterday ahead of a massive field of 1796 runners.
The 32-year-old was in a tightly-knit group of five on the outward run but opened up between six and seven kilometres and came home some 80 metres clear of the consistent Sheffield Running Club runner Will Beauchamp and John Franklin of the London-based Serpentine club.
Keight has run this race four times previously with a best position of fourth. His time in yesterday’s win, 31:48, is a personal best for the distance despite the fierce wind which hampered the runners particularly on the outward run. He has been away from the local scene, working for two years as an accountant in Brisbane, but he is clearly getting back to his best form.
Five-times winner Andy Ward (Clowne RR) was a non- starter this time but his club were well represented by Gareth Lowe who finished fourth.
Hallamshire runners dominated the leading positions. Andy Challenger was an excellent fifth and Jonathan Shields seventh, an outstanding performance from a 16-year-old. They also had Adam Dyson, 16th, Darren Newbould, 15th, Zak Mellor, 16th, Phil Cooper, 18th and Ben Beattie, 19th. Completing the top 20 was another outstanding young athlete, 15-year-old Alfie Manthorpe (City of Sheffield)
Leading woman was Steph Burns (Rotherham). Winner two years ago, Burns was making a good return to form after a lengthy spell on the injured list.
