And the lads will be hoping to retain their English title when they compete in the County Finals next month.

Barclay Brown (Hallamshire GC), Charlie Daughtry (Rotherham GC), Ben Schmidt (Rotherham GC) and Callum Macfie (Lindrick GC) were the local quartet of the six players on duty at Pleasington GC, near Blackburn.

In the qualifier they did battle against other county sides over 36 holes of stroke play with the best five scores from each six-man team counting for each round.

Cheshire had a comfortable six shot lead after the first round with Yorkshire on 370 in second place followed by Cumbria on 382, hosts Lancashire on 383, Northumberland on 389 and Durham trailing on 399.

What turned out to be the round of the day was recorded in the morning by Sheffield hotshot Barclay Brown.

The England Boys’ Team member carded an exceptional four under par score of 67 courtesy of halves of 35 and 32. He birdied the 5th, 7th, 9th, 11th and 13th holes and dropped his only shot of the round on the par 3 16th.

Fellow Yorkshire team member Ben Schmidt also showed some exceptional scoring in his round of 74 with a terrific back nine score of 29, four under par.

Yorkshire who seized the initiative with a second round total of 369, one better than their morning performance. The counting scores for Yorkshire were Callum Macfie (73), Barclay Brown (73), Ben Schmidt (74), George Heath (74) and Michael Hay (75).

So it was Yorkshire who came out on top after a hot, humid and rather tiring 36 holes of golf at Pleasington course. Their aggregate score of 739 provided them with a 17 strokes victory over second placed Cheshire with an improving Northumberland in third place on 765, followed by Cumbria on 768, Lancashire on 770 and Durham on 786.

Individual honours for the championship went to Barclay Brown who won the John Todd Trophy for the best 36 hole score (140), Dominic Barron for the best morning round (68) and Archie Davies for the best afternoon round (72).

Congratulations to the Yorkshire team and the very best of luck to their players and officials for the Boys’ County finals at Rockcliffe Hall, County Durham, in August 28-30.
