Matt Fitzpatrick will today compete in his first tournament as a full time European Tour player.

The Sheffield golfer tees off at the Alfred Dunhill Championship in South Africa at 11.40am, less than a month after securing his Tour card for 2015.

And he is delighted to know he will be competing at the top level every week after tasting action in a handful of tournaments on invitation following his decision to turn pro earlier this year.

“Playing on my European Tour invites this season, I realised that I want to be doing that every week,” the 20-year-old said.

“We’re just so well looked after, and at the Scottish Open in particular I didn’t play too well, but the event was fantastic and made me think that I want to do it every week.

“Of course everyone says that, but now I have the chance to, and I can’t believe it.”

Something Fitzpatrick is keen to avoid is a battle to retain his Tour card the following season.

And he is quickly setting his sights higher than mere European Tour survival.

He said: “You don’t want to think about just keeping your card, as it then becomes more like protecting a lead, playing safe, so you just want to go for it and play well.

“For me it has to be the case that while I want to keep my card for next year, it is not what I should be aiming for, as I want to do well.”

Fellow Sheffield golfer Danny Willett tees off at 12.20 as he looks to build on his victory in the Nedbank Golf Challenge in South Africa last weekend.
