Another double header awaits after a scintillating win over Surrey and a loss at Manchester meant the end of season dance couldn’t quite be booked…yet. A Friday evening journey to Bristol followed by the visit of Worcester on Sunday should see the position become clearer.

After a couple of uncharacteristic displays, we bounced back in a big way last Friday. Surrey came to us on the back of three ninety plus scores in the last five games but found us in determined mood. We restricted them to just 25 in the first half and 34 in the second while comfortably pouring in 88 of our own to record a sizeable 88-59 win. Leading the way was Antwon Lillard. He completed his fourth double-double of the season, all of which have come at Ponds Forge, to finish with 24 points and 10 rebounds. Coach Atiba Lyons was pleased with the relentless display.

‘We came out alright. There was a little bit of feeling out from each team but we quickly got ourselves going. The starters had a nice flow to the game and Antwon played well. He made some great decisions, got some assists and finished some plays off and we never relented. It was good to see the energy and the focus there.’

A win in Manchester would have almost seen our playoff berth booked. Sadly it wasn’t to be. The Giants are a team benefitting from the installation of their new Coach Lloyd Gardner and are a tough prospect, especially on their home court.

We can take destiny into our own hands with a couple of wins this coming weekend. On Friday, we make the journey down to Bristol. We held off a late fightback from the Flyers to take the game by 82-79 in mid-March and we already have the season head-to-head over Andreas Kapoulas’ team.

Fifth placed Worcester Wolves are the visitors to Ponds Forge on Sunday. They have three games left to complete their regular season programme and are a side we are hunting down as sides jostle for the best possible finish.

Five games over the next three weekends will see what sort of seeding we get. It’s been a long, challenging campaign due to Covid but we feel the effort we have put in should bring some reward. As ever, check out our games on the streaming platforms.
