Sheffield Steelers: Pressure off Mathieu Roy as scoring threat is spread

Paul Thompson says he is in a fortunate position because he cannot predict who his top scorer will be next season.

Sheffield Steelers leaned heavily on Mathieu Roy and (the now departed) Michael Forney for a big proportion of their goals last term.

Thompson believes the new line-up will spread the burden - so much so anybody from six or seven forwards could lead the team at any one time.

“Obviously Mathieu is going to be up there “ said the coach. “He was new to the UK last year and we will be working hard with him to reach the same standard or even improve, as coaches will know more about him and how to coach against him now. He is a massive plus for us.

“I think there will be more goals from Colton Fretter in the coming season, but there are players like Fredrik Vestberg who scored 40 points in the Allsvenskan League. Levi Nelson will come up with points, too.

“Then there is Jeff Legue, who has made a living out of being a clutch scorer. When I look at the line up I can see six or seven guys who might get into our top three scorers.”

The Elite League meet to set the fixtures for 2015-16 on Thursday, next week. One date is already set in stone: Steelers will host Nottingham Panthers on Boxing Day.
