Matt Fitzpatrick made a steady start to life as a full member of the European Tour at the Alfred Dunhill Championship in South Africa.

The 20-year-old Sheffield golfer shot a one under par round of 71 at Leopard Creek.

His round included 12 pars with a double bogey on the eighth the only real blot on his copy book.

Fellow Sheffield golfer Danny Willett continued his blistering recent form to move in to early contention for top spot.

Willett won the Nedbank Challenge last weekend and followed up with a six under par opening round featuring 12 pars and six birdies.

“It was nice to know when the gun went again, on the first tee, the adrenaline was still flowing,” Willett said.

“I kind of coasted around the front nine, not hitting too many spectacular shots, but did enough and played real solidly on the back nine.

“It was good because I never really knew how it would be after last week.”

On-form Willett has not dropped a shot in his last 73 holes.

South African Branden Grace has a three shot lead at the top of the leaderboard after an incredible ten birdie round of 62.
