VIDEO: Sheffield Steelers 0-1 Belfast Giants (penalty shoot out)

Sheffield Steelers needed two points in regulation time against Belfast Giants last night to pep up their hunt for the Elite League title - but they had to settle for a single regulation time point as the Irish took a penalty shot win.

Steelers yet again conceded ground to a competitor.

They had started the evening off in fourth place, level on points with the champions.

And they were more than aware that Nottingham Panthers’ 5-0 win over Coventry Blaze on Friday night had seen Panthers claim second spot behind Braehead Clan - although Panthers came a cropper on Saturday at Cardiff Devils.

Last night’s contest was game six of their eight game EIHL series between the English and Northern Irish clubs.

The previous five games have all been won by the home side on the night.

This was to be the exception.

Steelers had a rash of chances in the first period, but were halted by some excellent goaltending from Carsen Chubak.

The goalless period was great end-to-end entertainment, both sides forechecking well and with a few hits sprinkled in.

Danny Bois and Tyler Mosienko came close to breaking the deadlock for the home side.

It was the same again in the second period but this time Sheffield were less assertive and there was concern for Colton Fretter, who took a big hit on the boards and seemed to suffer a neck injury.

With neither side making a mistake in the last regular period, it went to overtime.

Mike Forney, Mathieu Roy and Tyler Mosienko all missed for Steelers - leaving Giants to take the game.

Mike Kompon scored the decisive shot.

Coach Gerad Adams felt like banging his head against the wall at the end of the night - while he thought his team had played well, clearly there was no execution in front of goal.
