Sheffield’s Joe Root and his County Championship-winning Yorkshire team-mates paid a visit to Buckingham Palace today to formally receive their medals from His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh.

The Duke, who has been patron and ‘Twelfth Man’ of the UK’s leading youth cricket and disability sports charity since 1950, presented the Lord’s Taverners ECB trophy to Yorkshire captain Andrew Gale and teammates including Root, Jonny Bairstow and Tim Bresnan.

Head coach Jason Gillespie and president Dickie Bird, from Barnsley, were among the Yorkshire representatives attending this special Royal engagement which The Duke of Edinburgh has hosted for the county cricket champions every year since Hampshire won in 1973.
