It is back to the bread and butter of the Super 8s for Sheffield Eagles this weekend, as Mark Aston looks to end the final phase of the season on a high.

The Eagles will be focusing on Sunday’s clash with Leigh Centurions following a tough week for the majority of Aston’s squad, after it was announced on Monday that 10 players will be leaving at the end of the campaign.

Aston’s side will be big underdogs in their remaining four Super 8 matches as they take on Championship winners Leigh, followed by three games against Super League opposition.

Whilst it remains a possibility that the Eagles could still attain Super League status, it would be some achievement if they were to spring a surprise and turn over one of their upcoming opponents.

Even one victory would have huge financial significance for the club as the higher they finish in the Super 8s, the bigger the pot of prize money at the end of the campaign.

“Can we get another two points? If we can, then there’s a good chance that we will get a little bit more money,” Aston told The Star.

“There is no doubt if we can get some more points then the revenue will be very useful for the club.

“You wouldn’t write Halifax off catching the rest because they can beat anyone on their day.

“You saw what Bradford were like against us, they then lost heavily against Wakefield and then they went and beat Salford comfortably at home.

“It all depends on what day you catch teams.”

The Eagles travel to Leigh on Sunday for the final game against Championship opposition, and face a Centurions side that will be severely down on confidence after suffering three consecutive defeats in the Super 8s.

“We go to Leigh with nothing to lose and what we do know is that whenever we have played them in a high pressure game, we have come out on top,” Aston said.

“We beat them two years on the bounce in the semi-finals before the Grand Finals.

“We know that on our day we can beat them, we know that on our day we can beat anybody for that matter.

“There are smiles on faces around the place again, which has been missing for a coupler of weeks for obvious reasons, and I can really sense a buzz again.”
