Former Sheffield Eagles forward Sam Barlow knows he’s in for a tough time if he lines up against his old club in the Tetley’s Challenge Cup tomorrow.

The prop made a controversial move to Halifax a couple of seasons ago and can be sure of a panto villain reception from Eagles fans.

“You get a bit of that but I enjoy it because it’s my old club,” he said. “And the (Eagles) players seem to know how to rile me up. You have to expect it.

“But I’ve stayed friends with a lot of the lads and Mark Aston did a lot for me when I was at Sheffield.”

The clash at Don Valley Stadium (kick-off 8pm) guarantees a Championship team a place in the quarter-finals.

In two seasons with the Eagles, Barlow played 40 games. He helped Fax win the Northern Rail Cup last season.Barlow admits it wasn’t the draw he was hoping for with the clubs also set to meet in the league in two weeks time.

“It was a shock,” he said. “When you get to this stage everyone hopes for either a home draw or a Leeds or Wigan. We got Sheffield, a very good team away.

“It’ll be a great game and a lot of our fans will be there because of the history that goes with the Challenge Cup. It will be tough.”
