Rugby League: Owlerton return excites Eagles fans

Sheffield Eagles fans believe they are on a winner with the move to play first-team games at Owlerton Stadium next season.

Around 150 fans packed a meeting at the greyhound venue last night to hear more about the return to where the club first played in 1984.

“We are back where it all started and that’s the important thing,” said coach Mark Aston. “We wanted to stay in Sheffield and now we need to get the people back who used to support us years ago.”

The club confirmed that they will play home games on Sunday and revealed that the kick-off time is likely to be brought forward to 2 or 2.30pm.

Owlerton has provided a lifeline for the Championship title holders who feared they might be forced out to the city by the closure and demolition of Don Valley Stadium.

John Gilburn, Owlerton managing director, said they were “proud” to have the Eagles “back home” and added: “This relationship is very important and we will do everything to make it a success.”
