Sheffield Tigers’ star Josh Redfern has agreed to join Rotherham Titans for the 2015/16 season.
The Tigers continued their promotion bid with a 61-15 win over Lymm last weekend.
But days later, Titans confirmed that 21-year-old Redfern would be joining them.
“Josh is a big lad with a lot of natural talent who’s a very good ball carrier,” said Titans coach Lee Blackett.
“He’s someone I’ve worked with for the last three years at Sheffield Hallam University.
“He’s been playing his rugby at Sheffield Tigers and he’s been one of their outstanding performers on a regular basis throughout the season.
“There’s no doubt that his biggest attribute is his ball-carrying abilities and he’s very versatile as he can play in the second row and back row.
“At this moment in time I’d say his best position is either 6 or 8, but he has the capabilities of playing in the second row.
“Like all young players he’s got some work-ons and it’s going to be a big development year for him next season.
“But he’s a very committed player and I expect him to make the improvements necessary to compete at this level.”
Redfern, aged 21, has been training with Titans for three months.
“I’ve been privileged to have Lee as a coach for the past three years at University and I’ve learned a lot under him,” he said.
“He’s helped me to massively improve my game, building on my strengths and helping me deal with my weaknesses.
“I am looking forward to a new challenge with Rotherham and fighting for a first team spot.
“I have spent the past three months here and the lads have been brilliant to work with, looking after me and helping to learn.
“Rotherham have a cracking environment and you can see why they have produced so many Premiership players.
“A big thanks must also go to Sheffield Tigers for the two seasons I have been there; playing at a higher level has brought my game on, especially my understanding and role within the team.
“I would not have been able to achieve the honours I have without their support and help and wish them all the best for the future.”
Tomorrow, second-placed Sheffield RUFC continue their own quest for promotion when they host West Hartlepool at Abbeydale.
