CITY of Sheffield Saints missed out on the chance of post-season glory as they went out at Division 3 South winners London Westside in the play-off semi-finals.
The Saints had the better for the first quarter with seven points each from Kingsley Ellmer and Chris Hackett, and five from Pete Olusoga gave them a 15-21 lead.
Westside hit back in the second period. The host’s height advantage caused problems for the Saints defence, and with Ellmer in foul trouble, the margin was cut to 38-40 at half time.
Chris Law did his best to hold off Westside with three three-pointers in less than four minutes of the third period. But the Londoners took a 57-55 into the final 10 minutes where they closed out the match 72-69.
Coach Garnet Gayle said Westside’s size made the difference: “We were beaten by length. Three of Westside’s players are at least five inches taller than our tallest player.”
Scorers: Ellmer 17, Law 16, Hackett 13, Olusoga 11, Stewart 10, Gayle 2, Jim Rose & Connor Faulkner.
Saints are now looking for new sponsorship and new players for next season’s Division 3 campaign. Most pleasing has been the development of John Stewart, Jim Rose and Connor Faulkner who have played for the club as well as the Junior Sharks Under 18s.
